Gregg Araki (b. December 17, 1959) is an American film director of independent films. He is a seminal figure of the New Queer Cinema genre.
Early life
Araki was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Santa Barbara, California. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies at UC Santa Barbara and an MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California in 1985.
Career
Araki made his directorial debut in 1987 with Three Bewildered People in the Night. With a budget of only $5,000 and using a stationary camera, he told the story of a romance between a video artist, her lover and her gay friend.
Two years later, Araki made a name for himself on the festival circuit with Long Weekend (o' Despair). Produced, directed, written, photographed and edited by Araki (for his own Desperate Pictures Company), this very small-scale Big Chill derivation involved a group of recent college graduates brooding over their futures during one woozy, boozy evening.
He followed this up in 1992 with The Living End, a road movie about two HIV-positive men whose paths cross one fateful day and the tumultuous relationship which ensues. The film starred Craig Gilmore and Mike Dytri, and featured Mary Woronov (who appeared in several of "underground" films by Andy Warhol) and cult favorite Paul Bartel. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
Araki's next three films comprised his "Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy."
Totally Fucked Up (1993) (Totally F***ed Up in publicity) chronicled the dysfunctional lives of six gay adolescents who have formed a family unit and struggle to get along with each other and with life in the face of various major obstacles. Araki himself classified it as "A rag-tag story of the fag-and-dyke teen underground....A kinda cross between avant-garde experimental cinema and a queer John Hughes flick". The movie explored the youths' depression and homophobia.
The Doom Generation was a black comedy brimming with graphic violence, cultural symbolism and relentless eroticism. The film starred Rose McGowan, Johnathon Schaech and James Duval (who had starred in Totally Fucked Up), with cameos by indie favorite Parker Posey, comedienne Margaret Cho, 21 Jump Street actor Dustin Nguyen, The Brady Bunch star Christopher Knight, The Love Boat star Lauren Tewes, Hollywood madame Heidi Fleiss and musician Perry Farrell. While largely trashed by critics, the piece won a measure of respect in a number of circles and is available on DVD and VHS in both rated and unrated versions due to several intensely sexual scenes as well as the film's extremely violent climax.
Nowhere (1997) was described by its director as "A Beverly Hills 90210 episode on acid." It centered around a group of bored, alienated Los Angeles teenagers during a typical day of kinky sex, drugs, and the requisite wild party. Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Debi Mazar, Christina Applegate, Heather Graham, Ryan Phillippe, Jaason Simmons, Scott Caan and Mena Suvari starred in the film, with cameos by Beverly D'Angelo, Facts of Life star Charlotte Rae, Traci Lords, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, John Ritter and International Male and fitness model Brian Buzzini.
Araki's subsequent effort, the romantic comedy Splendor, told the story of a woman (Kathleen Robertson) who cannot choose between two men (Johnathon Schaech and Matt Keeslar) and so decides to live with them both. Splendor was both a response to the controversy surrounding his relationship with Robertson and an homage to screwball comedies of the 1940s and '50s. Hailed as the director's most optimistic film to date, it made its premiere at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. The film itself however was considered to be a disappointment (and even a failure with some.) among Araki fans who felt that he sold out by making a more lighthearted piece and by dating Robertson. The two later broke up and Araki has since dated mainly members of the same sex.
Araki's next venture was the ill-fated MTV series This Is How the World Ends (2000), which was meant to have a budget of $1.5 million. The network only gave him $700,000 and hoped to find partners to finance the difference. Araki offered to make the pilot episode for $700,000, and MTV took him up on it. After the pilot was shot, however, it was not picked up for broadcast, there are however circulating the internet bootleg copies of the ill-fated mini series.
Following a short hiatus, Araki returned with the critically acclaimed Mysterious Skin (2005) based on a novel by Scott Heim, which tells the story of a teenage hustler and a withdrawn young man obsessed with alien abductions, and how they both deal with the sexual abuse they suffered from their Little League coach when they were children. With this movie Araki found critical acclaim and a generally good public reaction.
Araki's ninth feature, made in 2007, was the stoner comedy Smiley Face, starring Anna Faris, which he directed with a screenplay by Dylan Haggerty. Araki wanted to make a comic film after shooting the more serious and darker film, Mysterious Skin his eighth movie. Critics have mentioned the potential of this film in becoming a "cult classic." One consistent feature of Araki's work to date is the presence of music from the shoegazer genre as film soundtracks, first seen on Totally Fucked Up and heavily so on the films Nowhere and Mysterious Skin (even going so far as to employ Robin Guthrie to oversee the latter's score). Both The Living End and Nowhere are named after tracks by shoegazing bands (The Jesus and Mary Chain and Ride respectively).

Tracing the progress of innovative filmmakers is a pleasure for movie buffs. Gregg Araki developed a unique voice in film in the early 1990s (this film dates back to 1993), a voice that maintained a sense of immediacy with his actors who he directed with his hand held camera in a manner that gave the illusion that the 'script' was extemporaneous. Careful not to assign controversial roles to inadequate talent, Araki gathered a group of young actors and pulled the very best from them. Many of these early actors still maintain presence in Araki's prolific flow of films.
As is so often the case with Araki's stories, TOTALLY F***ED UP deals with gay sensibilities in a way that displays the entire spectrum of positive and negative response to his characters. He does not preach: he simply voyeuristically reveals lifestyles as though he were a hidden personage who just happened to fall into private moments and turbulent emotions. In this film Araki divides the examination of six teenage gay kids (four boys and two girls) into 15 dialogues, each representing an aspect of what faces his characters and how they cope with being on the fringe. The 15 episodes are related because the characters remain the same and it is this unique manner of making his story that has continued to be a trait of Araki's later, more linear films.
We meet each of the six characters in an interview situation, with only the minimal amount dialogue conveying the maximum amount of information. The primary character is Andy (a superlative James Duval) whose view of life is bleak to say the least: Andy doesn't believe in love, in commitment, believes he is bisexual even though he has never stepped out of his same-sex playing out, grows to depend on his friends, falls in love with a sweet talking fellow Ian (Alan Boyce) only to discover Ian is not at all monogamous, and finally feels the pain of heartbreak and makes a decision about life that ends the film. The other characters include Michele (Susan Behshid) and Patricia (Jenee Gill) who are lesbian lovers and stable figures for the boys, desiring to have children and a wholesome life without the need for male penetration!; Steven (Gilbert Luna) and Deric (Lance May) who are coupled but come apart when Steven has an affair and Deric is gay-bashed; and Tommy (Roko Belic), the one who falls in love too easily with every one night stand he has.
The episodes deal with the characters' sexual attitudes, AIDS, life on the streets, drugs, parental alienation, loneliness, abuse, suicide, and the desperate need for extended family. With Araki's technique we come to care strongly for each of these disparate kids: by the end of the film they feel like close personal friends of ours.
The filming technique is choppy and slips out of focus and seems to idle like a malfunctioning engine at times, but in Araki's sensitive hands these aspects add to the tension of the story. Clearly Gregg Araki is a gifted artist, and his films subsequent to this successful one serve to prove his growth and increased power of heart to heart communication. Highly recommended.

Description: It starts with the birth of "Little Brother", the son of diabolical murderer Aage Kroeger and the nurse Judith. Description: If you loved Lilja 4Ever - there's something wrong with you. You won't love this film - that's for sure - unless there's something wrong with you. This film is nearly - but only nearly - unwatchable. And I take that as a sign of its success. Had we been in any way aroused by what we saw, had we been allowed to distance ourselves from the suffering we saw, had Moodysson failed to reveal the conflicted, ambivalent motivations underlying the actions of these characters - who say little but reveal much - the film would be another Requiem For a Dream - but it isn't. You won't watch this film twice - unless there is something wrong with you. But it's honest in the way few films dealing with the subject are. I don't think it pretends to be representative of the porn industry as a whole - but it does remind us that our consumption of porn has a price. This is not an enjoyable movie. It shouldn't be an enjoyable movie. But is it well thought out? Well executed? Well acted? Important. Yes, it is. It's been awhile since Sweden has produced a movie that has shocked complacent audiences - for the past few decades it's been churning out silly nostalgia-driven films. I loved Show Me Love - but this is a far superior film.

Description: Full of snow, sex, Volvos and ABBA, Together may at first appear to be a trawl through every Swedish cliché in the book, but is in fact a delightful, absorbing movie. Ataraxia is anItalian Neo-Classical band who combine modern technology with archaic instrumentation over various media. They describe their music as a cross "between sacred and profane, etheral and neo-classical, contemporary and early music". They make researches into the European legends crossing the Greek and Latin myths. Contemplation, dreamy experiences, elegiac atmospheres, ritual movements float in a mysterious garden where contemporary textures of notes meet the embracing echo of classic sounds. Their lyrics are written in many ancient and contemporary languages as they try to bring to surface the hidden treasures and revelations that each language owns. Many of their performances take place in locations the band professes to possess specific spiritual qualities.Since the beginning of the group in the late 80's, they performed some 20 original LP's.
